Clackamas Heritage Partners (dba Historic Oregon City) directs, integrates, and coordinates the development of new and existing heritage-based programs and initiatives within our community. We manage the Mt. Hood Territory Visitor Center at the End of the Oregon Trail and partner with the Oregon City Site Support Committee to preserve the City's historical sites and attractions. CHP's mission is "to preserve the heritage, educate the public and interpret the history of the Oregon Trail, Clackamas County and Oregon City; the western terminus of the Oregon Trail."
Clackamas Heritage Partners' focus is the history of the Oregon Trail, the Oregon Territory, Historic Oregon City and Clackamas County with special emphasis on the 1840s through the 1880s. Since our formation in 2004, we continue developing programs that create a more integrated and exciting heritage experience for visitors to our community. The collection, preservation and interpretation of the history and culture of historic Clackamas County remains integral to the organization’s mission.
Today's visitors have high expectations. Beyond product quality and excellent customer service, they expect genuine and authentic experiences of the places they visit. In a world that is 'reality television' rich, experience is the thing that makes “going” worthwhile. The world is coming to visit, and we want to make them feel welcome. But as a tourism destination, we currently lack the capacity to present the stories of the past in an integrated, compelling, consistent, and professional way.
In response, the Board of Directors has identified three main areas for program development at our heritage sites.
• Heritage Products - programs and services to be marketed under “Historic Oregon City” • Educational Programs - interpretive presentations, exhibits, “please-touch” activities and living history • County heritage services - outreach to county historical groups, preservation efforts, technical assistance services
For many, “Oregon” remains a place to see. Virtually everyone has heard something about us. Because Oregon City is built at Willamette Falls, the second largest waterfall in the US, we are the gateway to the geological, tribal, natural, cultural and industrial experiences that comprise Oregon. Whether it’s our natural beauty or our rich heritage, Oregon has been and remains a place about which people say, “One of these days, I want to see for myself.”
